I make new resolutions at the start of the new year. I don’t keep them, but I make them.  This year I am making one that I am going to keep.  I am not going to spend any money on new camera equipment this year.  If I want a new lens (which I do), I will sell one that I have in order to buy it.  Photography is an expensive hobbie/profession but it does not have to be. The gear I have is great but in the digital age and with the use of social media you are constantly bombarded with the next best/new thing.  Another part of my problem last year was that I was always thinking that I needed the newest gadget, camera, lens, software, etc.  I am going to use what I have and really focus on shooting. Just get out there and shoot and not worry about the gear.

So, in saying that, I will leave you with a shot of a not so new camera from the film age. It is my friend Donna’s beautiful Argus 75.

Last year was not my best year in photography.  I’m not sure why, but that’s the way it is.  I realize now that I was suffering from photographer’s block.  It’s not that there wasn’t anything to shoot, I just wasn’t inspired to shoot.  I was tired of the same old same old landscapes and trips through my town. I also really think I had a mini identity crisis with my photography. My interests mainly lie with the old: houses, architecture, historical places. Looking back on my work in 2011 I can see that I neglected my real interests in pursuit of something that I thought I wanted.  I was kidding around recently with my friend Donna that last year I wanted to be the wedding photographer and I wasn’t sure what I was aiming for this year.

Now that the problem has been identified, I feel renewed. It was a light bulb above the head moment. I know what I love to shoot and I already have a few place in mind. Some new places. Something that will get the creative juices flowing.

So, I am going to turn this neglected blog into a thing of beauty real soon!

I hope everyone will enjoy my work of 2012!!

I’ve been wanting to do some senior pictures for forever! Well lucky me finally got my chance! In the spring I took the lovely Katie’s prom pictures and was honored to get to take her senior ones as well! She is always a pleasure to work with and up for indulging me when I wanted to do something a little different. I hope she has a wonderful and memorable senior year!

We finally did it! After years of our daughters begging we gave in and took the plunge! It took months of planning (that’s just the way I am), more planning, and more planning. There are so many choices to make! Are you staying on the Disney resorts or driving in? Which parks are you going to? What rides/attractions are you going to do/see? These things take time to figure out. It’s really overwhelming and I have to say we learned a lot! If we ever take another trip we know exactly what to do! You even need a class on the transportation at Disney to make the most of it as they have buses, trams, monorails, and boats to get you places! I’m going to feature each of the parks (not the water ones) on my blog in the next week. Our first stop was the Magic Kingdom and I do mean magic!! Our daughters were so thrilled to get to go and entering the park was a happy, magical experience!

Magic Kingdom!

I’m not sure where to start! We stayed in Kissimmee, Fl and rented a house with a pool. We like to get up and not be rushed for breakfast and the drive was only 15 minutes. The first day we drove to Downtown Disney and took a bus to the park. Since we were there in the off season (still crowded, can’t imagine going in the summer!) it would have been better to drive, but live and learn! The bus took us to the Port of Orleans resort where we had to switch buses to finally make it to Magic Kingdom. Once we arrived, got our map and locker (you can rent them to store extra shoes, camera gear, snacks, etc) we hit the ground running, literally! Our favorites of Magic Kingdom were Space Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Jungle Cruise, and the Haunted Mansion. We rode Space Mountain a couple of times. Some advice that we did not take advantage of until our second day: get the Fast Pass! It doesn’t cost anything extra but time! You insert your park pass into the ride you want to go on and you get a ticket for the ride with your ride time (a one hour opening). It will save you some time standing in lines!!

I really loved the castle! It’s so stunning and reminds me of our time in Germany.

And even though we were tired to the bone, we stayed for the electric parade and fireworks. It was well worth it as the parade was so cool with all the lights and our favorite characters marching down the road to the castle!

They also had this awesome light show at the castle which made the castle look different every minute or so!

So there you have it in a nutshell! There’s really too much to cover and you could easily spend a couple of days at Magic Kingdom!

Oh, a little side note: I took my Canon 7D but decided to use my Canon Powershot S95 point and shoot for the whole time we were in the parks. It was so easy to carry but you could easily take a bigger camera in the parks and I saw literally hundreds of people sporting dslrs there. The lockers would come in handy to store extra gear such as tripods.

Sorry that I’ve been slacking on the blog! I guess life got in the way and by time I had time to post on here I was too tired. I’m going to do better, promise!!

This weekend my friend Donna asked me to go with her to find this sunflower field that her son had told her about. I was so excited to get and shoot! It seems like a long time since we had gotten together and hit the road for a shooting adventure. We had to drive way, way, way out to find this field! I decided that these shots would be great taken with my wide angle lens and I’m pretty happy with the results. Hope everyone had a great weekend and that you didn’t melt in this hot, muggy weather!

What in the world does this mean? I’d never heard this term “second shooter” until I started hanging with fellow photogs who shoot weddings. A second shooter is someone who assists and aids the hired photographer during a photography shoot.  Essentially a second shooter can fill in the gaps and help provide complete coverage of an event. If the hired photographer is shooting wide, the second shooter may want to close in on an event with a telephoto lens and vice versa. In the next couple of months I am going to serve as the second shooter for several photog friends during shoots (Meagan Fisher of MFisher Photography and Nancy Center of Joyful Moments Captured) and I am really looking forward to working with these ladies! The purpose of me doing this is to gain some experience and practice shooting weddings before I head out solo. Last weekend I got the opportunity to assist the talented Donna Tomlin on an engagement session. I was so glad that she asked me along and I got some great shots of this lovely couple. Sometimes it’s hard to find your place and know exactly what to do while second shooting, but all in all it’s a great way to learn and gain experience.

I shot the following pictures with my new Canon 70-200 f2.8 L lens. They say that that great photography equipment does not make a photographer any better but it sure doesn’t hurt!  And now here are a couple of shots from the engagement session with Donna Tomlin:

I have yet another new look for my blog and the truth is that it may or may not stick! There are so many options with WordPress but I think I’ve found something that suits my needs. There will still be a little tweaking here and there but hopefully not much will change.

So, Cheekwood in the spring is amazing. The flowers are beginning to bloom and they are putting together this awesome train exhibit set to open this Friday. I met a couple of friends there on Saturday and the tulips were beautiful! I wish I could have stayed longer but my allergies were wreaking havoc with my eyes. By the way, my photog friends are really so much fun and I always have such a great time hanging out with them. I look forward to our next get together!

I’ve been enamored with all the birds at my feeder. The first thing I do lately when I get home is grab my camera and head for my back door to watch the birds. This little guy was so pretty and I’ve also seen a cute little woodpecker, a pair of house finches and a cute little sparrow visiting. Would love for the weather to get a bit warmer so that I could shoot from outside the house.

Whew! What a week! I had been working non-stop at my regular job and also at moving my grandmother-in-law from Bristol, VA to Murfreesboro when I realized that I needed a little “me” time. Luckily my friend Donna asked me to go shooting with her downtown. I really didn’t feel inspired to do anything but was so happy for her company and for the beautiful day. I came away with a few shots that I liked. It seemed to be a “sign” theme with me that day. Many others were out shooting on the square too, but who could blame them? We’ve have nothing but the coldest of winters complete with record snowfall. The weather was just gorgeous! Here’s to spring!!
